“Beloved” Toni Morrison

“Beloved” Toni Morrison

“Me and you, we got more yesterday than anybody. We need some kind of tomorrow.”  Toni Morrison

This awesome tale speaks to the power of thought and belief.  Toni Morrison gives a glimpse into the insanity and pain of the slave owner and the enslaved female giving life into that world.  Sethe, escapes but is caught. She is then faced with the decision of a mother to protect her child from a life of enslavement by doing what is counter-intuitive of motherhood and she slices the throat of her baby. Freedom through death was a choice many enslaved women made at the time.

When she is allowed to move on, she is left to deal with her choices as a mother who has just “justifiably” murdered her child. The interesting thing is the marriage of love and guilt are so profound that it becomes a physical manifestation.  How do you live in that? How do you fine peace? How do forgive yourself to love?

“She is a friend of my mind. She gather me, man. The pieces I am, she gather them and give them back to me in all the right order.”  Toni Morrison
